Course Overview

This TV and Film Set Design course aims to prepare you for work in a professional art department in the film and television industry, and you’ll understand how drama and entertainment are developed from script to screen.

Work experience is a key part of the set design course and students have had successful placements on a wide range of productions locally and nationally, and have included Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Casualty at BBC Roath Lock, and Red Dwarf and feature film The Nutcracker at Pinewood, London. USW's TV and Film Set Design course is also part of Film & TV School Wales, which provides students with the skills and opportunities needed to work in today’s exciting TV and Film industry.

What you will study?

You will be immersed in a professional creative environment at our Cardiff campus, that benefits from strong industry links. You will develop an awareness of drawing, technical drawing and model-making, as well as explore the history of film and design to support your work.

Starting from a script or brief, you’ll learn how to design studio plans to scale, produce models, construction drawings and storyboards. You’ll also develop a full understanding of technical drawing, manual and in AutoCAD, model-making, and visualising. For a versatile portfolio, you’ll design for single and multi-camera productions over different genres, including period drama, science fiction, situation comedy, and light entertainment.
