Course Overview

Students are provided with a fast-tracked learning experience through access to USW’s innovative studio facilities, tutor expertise and collaborative learning environment. The course nurtures professional development and functions to build the relevant skillsets required for the next generation of producers.

This award aims to attract prospective music producers and composers who seek to become experts in the latest technology and forge careers within the creative industries of music, film, television, and game audio.

What you will study?

The programme equips the student with the practical techniques, theoretical knowledge, transferable skills and vocational experience required of a professional practitioner within the broad field of Music Production on a personal and professional level. As well as production skills, students will learn theoretical, compositional and transferable skills that will benefit their future employability within the music industry.

Year 1 (Level 4): The Creative Producer

Year one aims to develop individual and team-based music production skills, prior to establishing collaborative relationships within the wider faculty. The students will complete the year with high proficiency in industry-standard tools and techniques, generating confidence and professional practice to take forward.

Year 2 (Level 5): The Collaborative Producer

Throughout year two the course is designed to stimulate interaction with students from other courses and disciplines to master essential collaboration skills required of the successful producer. You will work on projects with musicians, songwriters, singers, filmmakers and gamers.

Year 3 (Level 6): The Professional Producer

The final year culminates in the development and creation of a unique creative Major Production Project that will generate a market-ready portfolio to take into industry. Students will be encouraged to work collaboratively both within the faculty and for external clients under the guidance of a specialist USW supervisor.

Academic Requirements:

The entry criteria below show the qualification range within which the University will make offers. Most offers we make are at the top of the range, but we take all aspects of an application into consideration and applicants receive a personalised offer. Combinations of qualifications are acceptable and other qualifications not listed here may also be acceptable.

Typical A-Level Offer

BCC - CDD to include a relevant subject (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).

Typical Welsh BACC Offer

Pass the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Diploma with Grade C/D in the Skills Challenge Certificate and BC - CD at A Level with a relevant subject (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).

Typical BTEC Offer

BTEC Extended Diploma Distinction Merit Merit - Merit Merit Pass in a relevant subject (this is equivalent to 112-80 UCAS tariff points).

Typical IB Offer

Pass the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 29 overall including 5 or above in English at standard level.

Typical Access to HE Offer

Pass the Access to HE Diploma with a minimum of 80 UCAS tariff points.

Additional Requirements

GCSEs: The University normally requires a minimum 5 GCSEs including Mathematics/Numeracy and English at Grade C or Grade 4 or above, or their equivalent, but consideration is given to individual circumstances.

English Requirements

In general, international applicants will need to have achieved an overall IELTS grade of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component.
