Course Overview

The course aims to develop an understanding of the specialist subject in the context of the National Curriculum. In particular, the principles involved in the teaching and learning of the subject across the full age and ability range and the professional values and practice, subject knowledge, and understanding commensurate with the particular subject specialism. This includes how children learn and how they develop cognitively, socially, and physically and the understanding, skills, and personal qualities necessary for managing the learning environment.

What you'll study?

Trainees undertake a course in business education, the focus of which is techniques for teaching pupils and assessing their learning. This entails appropriate planning for the 14-19 age group, the identification of appropriate goals and content for the programme of learning, strategies for the assessment, and the acquisition of skills for delivery and evaluation. The course aims are to:

  • Familiarise trainees with an existing subject provision in schools
  • Enable trainees to identify appropriate curriculum structures and content for teaching
  • Enable trainees to formulate, implement and evaluate teaching and learning strategies
  • Enable trainees to assess, record, and report on pupil progress and attainment
  • Support teaching and pupil learning through the use of ICT.

Entry Requirement 

Academic Requirements:

  • A UK honors degree or equivalent, at a minimum 2:2 in a degree related to National Curriculum subjects, or to education or child development more generally, will also be considered.
  • GCSE English and Mathematics at minimum grade C
  • Disclosure and Barring Service and Prohibition Order checks and a satisfactory health check passed prior to enrolling
  • Two references - one academic and one vocational.
