Transform your enthusiasm for design and technology into practical teaching skills. With school placements, tutor support and a graduated induction programme, our trainees are well prepared for teaching in secondary education and have an excellent record of obtaining first teaching posts.

Entry Requirement 

Your suitability for the PGCE Secondary programme is judged on a range of factors including academic qualifications, ability to work with other people and a real interest in learning and teaching.

Academic Requirements

  • GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in English and mathematics.
  • An honours degree (2:2 or above) or equivalent, from a recognised university (masters and PhDs also count towards entry requirements.
  • There is also a requirement to pass minimum standards for literacy and numeracy.

Masters and PhDs count towards entry requirements. A master's degree will be considered as a second class upper degree and a PhD as a first. This will also apply to international applicants.

English Language Requirements:

The scores required have been increased from the UKVI minimum specified scores to meet University requirements.

  • IELTS (Academic)
  • Trinity College London ISE (only a SELT if taken in the UK)
  • LanguageCert International ESOL 
  • Pearson PTE Academic

A SELT must be taken at an approved UKVI centre.

The other tests and qualifications listed here have been deemed acceptable by the University of Plymouth and UPIC to meet our entry requirements and UKVI requirements for study at RQF 6 and above. 

Please note that these tests and qualifications are not SELTs.

When studying on a pre-sessional course or course below RQF 6, a SELT is a mandatory requirement set by UKVI. 

If studying at RQF 6 level and above, the University is permitted to accept other qualifications that we deem meet UKVI and our requirements.
