Why study Agriculture with Animal Science at Aberystwyth?

  •  This degree is delivered by our award-winning Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS), which is also the home of the Farm Business Survey for Wales. 
  • Aberystwyth University has a long-established and enviable reputation throughout the world for its teaching and research in agriculture and rural science, and the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences is the largest and best-resourced university department of its kind in the UK.
  • Aberystwyth itself is surrounded by a great diversity of farmland and agricultural terrain. In addition, you will have access to the 1,000 hectare university farms, which are managed commercially by the Institute and used for teaching and research.
  • The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences is a recipient of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education. The award recognises work of outstanding excellence and world-class achievement, and acknowledges the work of scientists at the Institute in various disciplines.
  • The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences won the ''Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology'' category award at the Times Higher Education Awards 2013. In the joint 2014 entry with Bangor for the Research Excellence Framework assessment, the department came out in the top 10 in the UK for research intensity, and had the 5th strongest submission in the UK!
  • The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences also won one of the first ever Excellence with Impact Awards from the BBSRC, the UK’s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. The award recognises those university departments which are most active in embedding a culture that promotes and values the achievement of impact alongside excellent research.

Your BSc in Agriculture with Animal Science opens up a range of exciting opportunities for employment and further training. You will be a strong candidate for work as an agricultural consultant or farm manager, and because of your specialism in animal science, you will also succeed in animal-related management, animal nutrition, productivity, and welfare.

Throughout your training you will develop a wealth of skills that can be easily transferred into almost any graduate or professional employment situation. You will have first-rate technical and biological knowledge, combined with the ability to manage a farm or agricultural business efficiently, productively and safely. You will be confident in handling data and will be a strong communicator in both written and oral forms. You will also have valuable skills in the management of people, animals and resources, and will possess the latest expertise in agricultural best practice.
