Course Overview

Why choose this course?

  • The BSc/BA with Secondary Education courses are offered in a range of subjects, which are designated as subjects where there is a shortage of teachers in secondary schools;
  • These subjects are Chemistry, Computing, English, Mathematics, and Physics;
  • The course allows you to explore your chosen subject specialism in-depth and gradually moves from an emphasis on the acquisition of subject knowledge and its applications in Year One and Year Two, to an emphasis on the pedagogical and professional knowledge and understanding required by an effective subject specialist teacher in the final year;
  • Alongside your subject modules in Year Two, you will also undertake one education module which aims to introduce you to the foundations of pedagogical theory and effective teaching;
  • In the final year of your study, you will undertake Level 6 education modules alongside postgraduate teacher training students, as well as completing professional practice that will allow you to be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS);
  • Years Two and Three of your study include educational placement elements in order to prepare you for the workplace;
  • We are supported by over 600 partnerships with local schools, colleges and organizations, ensuring our courses meet the demands of the competitive graduate market;
  • The course design combines the essential elements required to prepare you to become successful newly qualified teachers (NQTs). These are advanced subject knowledge at the undergraduate level; knowledge of how children learn and are taught; specialist knowledge required to teach the chosen school subject and experience of being a practitioner in secondary schools.
