Program Benefits

The professional education sequence in a K-12 program provides students with a background in educational foundations, curriculum development, and teaching methods, along with field experiences necessary to be successful in today’s diverse K-12 classrooms. The programs offered through the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education prepare dedicated teachers with the skills, expertise, and pedagogy to meet the needs of 21st-century students.

Upon completion of the program requirements, students have:

  • A depth of knowledge in their chosen academic discipline;
  • A knowledge of the principles of human growth and development;
  • A knowledge of students with varying racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds;
  • A knowledge of the wide range of abilities and special needs of students; and
  • The ability to apply their knowledge and skills as they develop effective learning experiences for students during the methods and clinical components of the professional education sequence.

Career Options

Students who successfully complete all components of the professional education sequence in a K-12 program are eligible for licensure through the Illinois State Board of Education.

Entry Requirement 

Admission Requirements:

High School Transcript (required for current high school students)

High school juniors and seniors: You must provide an official high school transcript to the Admissions Office at the time of your application for admission. A letter of support and recommendation from your high school principal is also required.

ACT or SAT scores (required for current high school students)

High school juniors and seniors: Contact SAT or ACT to arrange for your test score to be sent electronically to the Admissions Office, or if you or the ACT or SAT will mail your test score to the Admissions Office, make sure the original sealed envelope has not been opened. Only sealed envelopes will be accepted.

Application fee

The $30 application fee is payable by mail (check or money order), online (debit or credit card), or in-person (cash, check, money order, debit, or credit card).

Additional Requirements for International Applicants

An international applicant is a foreign student who plans to apply for or is currently in the United States on a non-immigrant student visa. As an international applicant, you are required to fulfill all of the admission requirements and submit all the required documents that domestic applicants do. Additionally, you must demonstrate that you meet eligibility requirements for:

  • Non-immigrant student visa status
  • English language proficiency
