Programme Type:

Course Overview

You'll study core topics in coastal and port engineering, be introduced to numerical modelling techniques, obtain hands-on experience of using state-of-the-art software tools and carry out physical modeling of coastal structures within the COAST laboratory.

Supervised and supported by members of the COAST Engineering Research Group, you will also have the opportunity to undertake a substantial research project focused on an aspect of coastal engineering,

Key features

  • Equips engineering and science graduates with knowledge and understanding of engineering and coastal processes enabling them to work in this strategically important sector.
  • Learn how to quantify the loading effects of waves, tides, surges and manage the influences of climate change: sea-level rise and greater storminess.
  • Discover how coastal structures - breakwaters, groynes, sea walls - are designed to protect against flooding and coastal erosion.
  • Understand how modern ports are designed for the needs of international trade.
  • Work in our acclaimed COAST laboratory to develop skills in physical modelling and interact with our COAST researchers or collect data in Plymouth Sound.
  • Obtain hands-on experience in numerical modelling using modern industry software.
  • The programme is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates with an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng (Hons) or an Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree.

Entry Requirement

Academic Requirements:

Minimum of a lower second class honours degree (2:2) in engineering or physical science subject e.g. geography, environmental science or physics.

Students with advanced standing who can evidence an academic ability to similar levels may also be considered.

Applicants with overseas qualifications can check their compatibility with the UK equivalent through NARIC, who provide an advisory service.

English Language Requirements:

The following Secure English Language tests (SELTs) are Home Office (UKVI) approved and accepted by the University of Plymouth and the University of Plymouth International College (UPIC). The scores required have been increased from the UKVI minimum specified scores to meet University requirements.

  • IELTS (Academic)
  • Trinity College London ISE (only a SELT if taken in the UK)
  • LanguageCert International ESOL
  • Pearson PTE Academic

A SELT must be taken at an approved UKVI center.

The other tests and qualifications listed here have been deemed acceptable by the University of Plymouth and UPIC to meet our entry requirements and UKVI requirements for study at RQF 6 and above.

Please note that these tests and qualifications are not SELTs.

When studying on a pre-sessional course or course below RQF 6, a SELT is a mandatory requirement set by UKVI.

If studying at RQF 6 level and above, the University is permitted to accept other qualifications that we deem meet UKVI and our requirements.
