Course Overview

Our French and Spanish BA is ideal for you if you have studied either or both French and Spanish to A-level, and wish to study both of those languages to a degree level while discovering and developing an understanding of the social, political, and cultural forces that have shaped contemporary France and the Francophone world, Spain, and Latin America. This course is suitable for students with an A-level in French and Spanish, as well as those who wish to take one of those languages from Beginners's level. The course is divided equally between both languages and you will reach an equivalent standard of knowledge and ability in both by the end of the course.

Throughout the course, you will develop written skills in French and Spanish through the production of short pieces of creative writing and other activities, including online language learning and the use of materials taken from French and Spanish television. Oral teaching is conducted in small groups, mostly by native speakers. We have state-of-the-art language laboratories which can help you learn through interaction with a range of audio and visual media, plus interpreting booths and open access space to study.

Developing your foreign language skills gives you a powerful advantage in business and opens up a wide and exciting range of careers. You will be able to immerse yourself in a rich culture of learning-led experience in a supportive and tailored learning environment, and you will be supported by our team of personal tutors to help you make the best of your time here.

You will study abroad for a year, where you can live as a student or work as a teaching assistant, with tutors on hand to help throughout the year. We have links with several universities in Belgium, France, Spain, Switzerland, Canada, and Latin America. Alternatively, you can take up an approved work placement. In addition, at the end of your first year, you will attend one of our fully-funded Summer Schools where you will be able to immerse yourself in the language and culture you are studying. If you choose to study one of the two languages at beginners level you will spend the summer school in the country of your beginner's language. If you are studying two languages at an advanced level you may choose which one of those countries to visit.
