Course Overview

Pairing a French major with a second major in a field such as political science, history, biology, business or economics makes you more marketable. A French major also helps prepare you for graduate study in business, law, health care, and for doctorates in a variety of fields. Future employers are attracted to French majors because they have the ability to function in unfamiliar environments, to communicate with people from differing backgrounds, and have great writing, communication and analytical skills.

 Program Goals:

The following areas of knowledge are central to the undergraduate degree in French:

  • Ability to describe and differentiate the phonetic features of modern standard French.
  • Familiarity with at least one period/genre of French literature.
  • An academic appreciation of the most important periods of French history and culture.
  • Awareness of current cultural issues in the Francophone world.

Skills: In addition, students completing the degree in French are expected to demonstrate:

  • The linguistic proficiency to speak and understand everyday standard French including the ability to engage in intellectual discussion in academic settings using correct pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary
  • The ability to read and write modern, standard French with sufficient fluency and correctness that literary or linguistic analysis of French texts can be performed without being hindered by grammatical problems
  • The ability to analyze and interpret literary texts in terms of style, structure, themes, etc., and the ability to communicate such interpretations competently.

Learning Outcomes:

  4. Students must show an awareness of current cultural issues in the Francophone world.
  5. Students must demonstrate the linguistic proficiency to speak and understand everyday standard French, including the ability to engage in intellectual discussion in academic settings using correct pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary.
  6. Students must demonstrate the ability to read and write modern, standard French with sufficient fluency and correctness that literary or linguistic analysis of French texts can be performed without being hindered by grammatical problems.

Entry Requirement 

Course Requirements:

1. The minimum grade acceptable in any French course applied to a French major is C- (1.7). The grade point average in all courses applied to a French major at CU Denver must achieve a minimum cumulative major GPA of 2.5.

2. No courses taken on a pass/fail basis may be credited toward a French major.

3. All students majoring in French must complete 30 semester hours of upper-division French courses (courses numbered 3000 and above). A minimum of 18 of those semester hours must be taken from the faculty in French at the Downtown Denver Campus.

4. Courses taken at other institutions while a student is enrolled at UCD may be applied to the major only with departmental approval before enrollment in those courses.

5. Students with Advanced Placement credits from high school or CLEP credits must see a French advisor about course equivalencies.

6. Upon declaring a major in French, each student will be assigned to a faculty advisor with whom the student should consult at least once per semester thereafter. It is especially important that students have their transcripts reviewed by their advisor before enrolling in their final 30 credit hours at UCD. Failure to do so may result in delay of graduation.
