Course Overview

What you will study?

During the Pre-Sessional English language course, you will receive twenty-three hours of taught classes each week with regular tutorials and two full-day Saturday excursions. Most materials will be supplied free of charge although you will be required to purchase one textbook at a cost of approximately £25.

The Pre-Sessional English Language course will help you to develop your general and academic English language skills in four key areas:

  • Writing for essays, research reports and examinations
  • Reading journals, articles and books
  • Listening to lectures, debates and discussions
  • Speaking during seminars and presentations

Teaching

We use a communicative language teaching approach. This means that you will be expected to actively participate and contribute to the classes. Assessment is by means of coursework, tests, projects and presentations. Students receive individual help and attention through weekly one-to-one tutorials in order to monitor progress and help to develop the skills necessary for academic study at a British university. We have a maximum class size of 18.

On every field trip, support is provided by two members of the Centre for International English team per coach. A full risk assessment is conducted before the trip and a departmental mobile number is made available to all students so that contact can be maintained throughout the trip between staff and students.

Entry Requirement

Applicants need a valid offer for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of South Wales. In addition, you must also have an IELTS (Academic) score of at least  5.0 with a minimum of 4.5 in writing and 4.0 in all other components. If you require a visa to study in the UK, you must take the IELTS for the UKVI version of the test. Students studying a course requiring a higher IELTS score than 6.0 may require a longer pre-sessional English course.
