Course Overview

What you will study?

During the 20-week Pre-Sessional English language course you will receive twenty-three hours of taught classes each week with regular tutorials and a number of excursions. Most materials will be supplied free of charge although you will be required to purchase three textbooks at a cost of approximately £25.

The 20-week Pre-Sessional English language course will help you to develop your general and academic English language skills in four key areas:

  • Writing for essays, research reports and examinations
  • Reading journals, articles and books
  • Listening to lectures, debates and discussions
  • Speaking during seminars and presentations

PLEASE NOTE: The first 10 weeks of this programme beginning in May will be taught online via distance learning as confirmed below. After the first 10 weeks, students will travel to the UK to complete the remainder of the programme on campus. Our Immigration and International Student Advice Team will offer advice on applying for a visa for the second part of the course. Due to the delivery method, the online version of the 20-week pre-sessional course takes longer to complete than the on-campus version (it takes 25 weeks) but the course fee and the entry requirements are those of the standard 20 week pre-sessional programme.

Entry Requirement

Applicants need a valid offer for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of South Wales. In addition, you must also have an IELTS (Academic) score of at least  4.0 with a minimum of 4.0 in each component. If you require a visa to study in the UK, you must take the IELTS for the UKVI version of the test. Students studying a course requiring a higher IELTS score than 6.0 may require a longer pre-sessional English course.
