Before you begin to earn your EdS-TESOL, you’ll need to determine whether you want to pursue the certification track or the non-certification track. We’ve designed each track to complement your education background and existing certifications. So, for instance, if you already hold Class A teacher certification in English as a Second Language (ESL) from the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE), you’ll complete the certification track and earn Class AA certification. Or, if you don’t hold ESL certification but you have a master’s degree in education or TESOL, completing the online noncertification track—and earning a Teaching Multilingual Learners Graduate Certificate—would be best for you. Both tracks require a minimum of 30 hours to complete and include courses in linguistics, teaching, research, and more. Bottom line—we want to prepare you not only to teach English, but to grow as a leader, researcher, and educator. You’ll find this degree could open up opportunities for positions such as lead teacher, division head, instructional coach, professional development facilitator, and program specialist.
