Course Overview

The program in criminal justice is designed as both a four-year major and as an affiliated program for students transferring from community colleges, providing students with excellent academic training and experience through our classes and internship program. The program is designed to prepare students to take an active role in the fields of criminal justice and homeland security.

BS in Criminal Justice Corrections Emphasis

In Corrections, students are taught the skills they will need to manage prisoners, interact with adult parolees and probationers, and supervise juveniles in the community or secured juvenile facilities. Students learn how courts and prisons work and different strategies for dealing with inmates, probationers and parolees, including rehabilitation efforts and counseling.

BS in Criminal Justice Homeland Security Emphasis

The United States Department of Homeland Security is comprised of twenty-two federal agencies and employs approximately 180,000 employees. The DHS organizational structure includes a wide-range of responsibilities ranging from emergency management, intelligence analysis to border and transportation security.

BS in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Emphasis

The emphasis in law enforcement is designed to achieve educational requirements for entry-level into local, state, and federal agencies and departments as well as private security. Many departments and agencies require a baccalaureate degree for supervisory and executive-level positions. The program addresses a number of complex areas including effective patrol methods, a criminal investigation, organized and transnational organized crime, intelligence-led policing, problem-oriented policing, and community policing that have formed the modern policing system and expanded the role of police in a Democracy.

Entry Requirement 

Academic Requirements:

For majors in this field, a minimum grade of 2.5 must be maintained on all criminal justice course work.

All CJ majors must complete a minor or second major selected by the student and approved by the student's academic adviser.

Course Requirements:

In addition to the 21-hour CJ core, students who select the Corrections emphasis must complete the following 27 hours of CJ course work:

CJ 120, 270, 320, 422, 444, and 12 hours of CJ electives.

Freshman Requirements:

  • Official English language transcripts from secondary school(s) attended; degree certificate if already graduated
  • Evidence of college preparatory curriculum, achieving a minimum 3.00 cumulative high school grade-point-average on a 4.00 scale (or its equivalent).

Transfer Requirements:

  • Official English language transcripts from all colleges and universities attended; degree certificate if already graduated.
  • Minimum 2.50 cumulative college or university grade-point-average on a 4.00 scale (or its equivalent).
  • Students who have completed less than 30 credits (or the equivalent of one year of full-time enrollment) at a college or university: Official English language transcripts and degree certificates from secondary school(s).

International Freshman/Transfer applicants graduating from a secondary school or transferring from a college or university in the U.S., whether in Mississippi or elsewhere, must meet the admissions requirements as listed in the section titled Admission of Freshman and Transfer Students in this catalog. Additionally, they must provide:

  1. Copy of passport identification pages, if available, to help ensure accuracy of name and birth date
  2. Affidavit of Financial Support if intending to hold F-1 or J-1 visa status. Although not required for admission, submitting the affidavit with other application materials expedites the admissions/enrollment process.
  3. English proficiency test score. Please see below.
  4. Copy of their U.S. visa or I-94 form (H4, L2, etc.), permanent resident card, or other documentation related to one’s status in the U.S.
