Our exciting program is contemporary and diverse and sets our graduates on the path to accomplish all of their goals as working drummers.

The drum programs on MI Online offer a diverse and practical approach to contemporary drum education. With MI Online’s classes, you gain first-hand access to some of the greatest drummers in the world.

The program is constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of drummers and the workplace, going beyond traditional drumming skills to include electronic drumming, digital recording, loops and sequencing. An MI Drum education gives you the real-world experience and confidence you need to meet the changing demands of the profession while you also preserve your individual vision as a player.

Students can earn a Certificate in MI’s Performance Studies program for Drum. With an innovative 360-degree approach to music education, MI’s Drum Certificate is centered on Reading, Technique and Performance. This Certificate program provides students with a broad foundation of knowledge and practical experience, encouraging the rapid development of skills in preparation for a range of professional music performance situations.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

MI has a competitive curriculum that will make sure students are fully prepared for everything they can encounter in a drumming career.

  • Cutting Edge – Courses such as E-Drumming, Studio Drumming, and Timekeeping present the latest technical side of drumming with a focus on Ableton Live, ProTools, and sound production. Our newest course, E-drumming Essentials, helps students further gain experience using acoustic triggers, triggering pads, multi pads, and e-kits.
  • Traditional – Drum Reading, Drum Technique and Developing Your Groove offer a clear and cohesive presentation of the fundamentals of drumming.
  • Balanced – Keyboard Proficiency, Drum Recording, Harmony & Theory and Ear Training give our drummers a musical edge with the knowledge to expand their careers in the songwriting and publishing fields.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. The student will develop professional performance abilities in contemporary commercial music styles as both solo and ensemble drumset performers through advanced studies in technique, reading, ensemble, stylistic appropriateness/ diversity, and live performance workshops/ ensembles.

  2. The student will develop professional studio production and technical skills through advanced studies of digital audio workstations, electronic drumming and gear mastery.
  3. The student will cultivate fundamental proficiencies alongside adaptability and inventiveness through the study of traditional and contemporary music theory, ear training, in-depth rhythmic studies, and keyboard proficiency.
  4. The student will choose options for specialized study in areas such as musical styles, secondary instrument study, popular music history, technology, music business, creative development and composition and analysis; assembling a skill set specific to themselves as artists/musicians

Entry Requirement 

Record A. and B. with a clearly audible metronome or drum machine (your playing must be distinct from the accompaniment).

A. Play two of the following rudiments at any tempo with consistent execution: Paradiddle, Double-Stroke Roll, Five-Stroke Roll, Six-Stroke Roll, Flam Taps, Four-Stroke Ruff.

B. Play 60 seconds of a syncopated rhythm groove with fills in any style and any tempo (NOT a solo).

C. Submit two performances that best represent your style and abilities. The recording may be solo or may include other musicians or play-along tracks. You may submit previously recorded material that features your playing, whether original material or covers.

D. Speaking Voice: Record your own speaking voice with a short narrative explaining why you wish to attend Musicians Institute.
