Course Overview

The DJ School at Musicians Institute provides in-depth knowledge and training for aspiring DJs, producers, beat-makers, remix artists & electronic musicians.

MI’s DJ School in Los Angeles offers students the skills to kick off a successful career on the decks. MI students are provided with in-depth knowledge and training in the latest technologies, tools and techniques used in contemporary electronic performance and production.

Our comprehensive classes for DJing include subjects in Beat-Matching, Vinyl Turntablism, various DAWs such as Ableton Live and Maschine, Digital DJ solutions such as Traktor Pro and Serato DJ, Remixing, Sound Design and much more. Students will also be trained on tools that have shaped DJing, such as Vinyl DJ’ing, Controllers and CDJ setups.

Musicians Institute’s Certificate in DJ Performance and Production is a 2-quarter, 30-unit program for aspiring DJs, producers, beat-makers, remix artists, and electronic music composers and performers. Students are provided with in-depth knowledge and training in the latest technologies, tools, and techniques used in contemporary electronic performance and production.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

  • All aspects of theory and musicianship for the electric and upright bass
  • Playing techniques for finger and slap styles
  • Exposure to various grooves like rock, funk, shuffles, swing, odd- meter, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, country, and jam-band
  • Performance classes to fine-tune listening skills and stage presence
  • Experience with chart reading and band interaction
  • Fretboard basics covering triads, chords, scales, harmonies and arpeggios
  • Includes music theory, ear training, music history, and understanding of different styles
  • Reading fundamentals for the bass clef, with rhythmic subdivisions, pitch identification, and string positions
  • A choice of elective classes for topics like upright acoustic bass as well as genres like metal, R&B and jazz

Entry Requirement 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

All eligibility, application, registration, placement and orientation requirements for the four-quarter/60 credit-unit Certificate in Performance are identical to those described for the Associate of Arts Degree in Performance.

APPLICATION PROCESS: CERTIFICATE

Send all of the following items together by mail along with any additional items required by the program to which you are applying (see below):

• Completed application form. • $100.00 USD application fee.

• High school diploma or proof of G.E.D. equivalent froman accredited institution (please provide an official English translation if the original is not in English).

Students who have withdrawn or been terminated from an Associate of Arts Degree Program and are seeking to transfer to a Performance Certificate Program within the same instrument major must contact the Student Records office for instructions. For information on transferring to a different instrument major, contact the Admissions Office.
