Course Overview

The Foundation Maths course will involve a large number of contact hours with Mathematics staff to ensure you are properly supported. Successfully passing the Foundation year guarantees you entry onto the first year of our BSc Mathematics course where you will build upon and apply the knowledge gained during the Foundation year. Our BSc and MMath Maths degrees are accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.

What you will study?

In this foundation year, you will study advanced topics in mathematics and its applications to best prepare you for success on a Mathematics degree. In particular, you will learn about methods in calculus, vectors and matrices, complex numbers, mathematical proof, mechanics, probability and statistics and mathematical computing.

  • Abstract and Linear Algebra
  • Further Calculus

  • Combinatorics and Networks
  • Financial Modelling
  • Introduction to Teaching Mathematics in Schools and Colleges

Teaching

This Maths course is taught through a combination of lectures, practical classes, workshops and tutorials averaging over 12 hours of contact time with staff each week. Your understanding of the material introduced in lessons will be reinforced through independent learning outside of scheduled classes.
