Course Overview

This major prepares students to work within this community in a variety of roles with particular emphasis on careers in American Sign Language education and in ASL/English interpreting. The major is designed with a multidisciplinary approach to the study of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people in the areas of teaching, language, community, history, culture, interpretation, and literature.

The undergraduate program in ASL Interpreting & Deaf Studies offers two curriculum concentrations that lead to the B.A. degree:

  1. ASL Interpreting: The ASL Interpreting concentration prepares individuals to work in settings that require an interpreter to facilitate communication between Deaf and hearing individuals.
  2. Deaf Studies: The Deaf Studies concentration seeks to educate students to communicate and interact with people who are d/Deaf and to apply this knowledge within work settings in which knowledge of d/Deafness and Deaf culture is essential. The Deaf Studies concentration is intended to prepare students to work in a variety of settings such as social services, vocational rehabilitation, and ASL education.

GPA Requirements:

Competition for space in the freshman class is rigorous. High school GPAs for the middle 50 percent of freshman admitted in Fall 2019 were between 4.1- 4.4.

For determining admissibility to USF, we will recalculate your high school GPA based on grades earned in high school only in core academic subject areas, as well as specified AP and IB fine and performing arts courses. USF will add the quality points outlined below for approved AP, IB, AICE, Honors and Dual Enrollment courses provided you earn a "C" or better.

Course Type Quality Point
Advanced Placement 1.0
International Baccalaureate 1.0
Dual Enrollment 1.0
AICE 1.0
Honors 0.5

Taking weighted courses can have a positive impact on your recalculated GPA as long as you are reasonably successful in these advanced-level courses.
