Course Overview

Geographers are fascinated by society and environment and examine how places are understood, imagined, used, shared and contested by different peoples. Geographers study the world at a range of scales, from the local to the global, and have a keen appreciation of how places are connected.

Be part of a rich discipline that engages with a vast range of philosophies and methodologies in its quest to understand people’s diverse relationships with the world.

With an onus on the independent, supervised study you'll be prepared for the nature of independent PhD research and will be able to develop your own indepth research interests which will prime you for further study. The key skills and knowledge gained in this course will prime you for jobs in market research, local government and consultancy.

Entry Requirement 

Academic Requirements:

  • Normally an honours degree (Upper Second class or better) in a relevant discipline OR overseas equivalent.
  • A minimum grade C in English Language or a minimum score of 6.5, with 5.5 in each of listening, reading, speaking and writing in IELTS.
  • A minimum Grade C Mathematics at GCSE level or equivalent.

Overseas applicants must have proficiency in English that is in accordance with the current University regulations. Completion of an English language course prior to commencing the programme may be recommended to students for whom English is not their first language.

English Language Requirements:

The following Secure English Language tests (SELTs) are Home Office (UKVI) approved and accepted by the University of Plymouth and the University of Plymouth International College (UPIC). The scores required have been increased from the UKVI minimum specified scores to meet University requirements.

  • IELTS (Academic)
  • Trinity College London ISE (only a SELT if taken in the UK)
  • LanguageCert International ESOL 
  • Pearson PTE Academic

A SELT must be taken at an approved UKVI center.

The other tests and qualifications listed here have been deemed acceptable by the University of Plymouth and UPIC to meet our entry requirements and UKVI requirements for study at RQF 6 and above. 

Please note that these tests and qualifications are not SELTs.

When studying on a pre-sessional course or course below RQF 6, a SELT is a mandatory requirement set by UKVI. 

If studying at RQF 6 level and above, the University is permitted to accept other qualifications that we deem meet UKVI and our requirements.
