Course Overview

Research can explore both practical and theoretical approaches to Sound and Music. Particular strengths at Abertay include synthesis, integration of dynamic audio within game engines and technologies, and exploration of sound design within virtual and augmented reality.

Research in this area benefits from the facilities of the Emergent Technology Centre and adjacent Recording Studio. Specialist audio labs, recording equipment, and software are also available for researchers interested in the development, installation, and testing of interactive audio.

Abertay University is the lead partner for InGAME: Innovation for Games and Media Enterprise, an AHRC-funded R&D center for Dundee’s games cluster. Postgraduate students at the university will have access to research and development opportunities, as well as contact with professionals working within the games industry. Dundee is one of the UK’s oldest and most successful games hubs, and we have longstanding relationships with local, national, and international game studios.
